Hello everyone!! October 29, 2024
There is a lot of questions whether you should clean your gardens in the fall. The simple answer is, Yes! But it's good to leave some dead plants for the hibernating beneficial insects:
Pest Control: Removing dead plants and debris helps eliminate pests that may overwinter in your garden. But be cognitive of the insects that we need that are wintering in the stems of your dead plants. Bees and butterflies winter in those stems.
Soil Health: Cleaning up allows for better air circulation and prevents mold and disease, promoting healthier soil.
Wildlife Food: Leaving some plant material, like dead stalks or leaves, can provide food for some of our wildlife.
Preparing for Spring: Fall cleanup helps set the stage for new growth in the spring, making it easier to plant and maintain your garden.
Mulching: You can use fallen leaves as mulch, which can enrich the soil as it decomposes.
Just be sure to strike a balance between cleaning and leaving some organic material for wildlife, decomposition for better soil and shelter for our pollinators!
